THE BRITISH ISLES

Dear Speak Up,
I have a question regarding your video about the rain in UK. The speaker says: “The British Isles has so much of it”.
Shouldn’t it be “the British Isles have (not has) so much of it?”

Well spotted! “Isles” is plural so the verb should be in the plural too, right? Well, yes, in fact you are right! In standard grammar, the sentence should be “the British Isles have.” However, because those “British Isles” form a group (singular), some people, especially when speaking, might use the singular form.  It doesn’t sound unnatural in informal, everyday speech. That said, if you have to refer to the British Isles in an exam, it’s better to play it safe and use the plural! Sarah

CROSSWORD ERRORS

Hello Speak Up,
mi piacciono molto i vostri cruciverba, li faccio ogni mese e mi aiutano molto con il lessico. Purtroppo negli ultimi mesi ho visto un paio di errori gravi che vorrei segnalarvi. In particolare su Speak Up di ottobre non erano presenti le lettere cerchiate che formano la frase nascosta, per cui era impossibile scoprirla. Invece nel numero di novembre c’era un cerchietto in più nella parola 16th down (‘swimmer’), e quindi la frase non aveva senso.

Cara Elena,
ci dispiace davvero tanto per questi due errori. Come direbbero gli inglesi, ‘shit happens’. (E come dicono in inglese, ‘pardon my French’). Non possiamo far altro che scusarci e fare del tutto affinché non si ripeta.
