Il sogno di ogni bambino, un posto incantato anche per gli adulti. Disneyland, in California, è stato inaugurato il 17 luglio 1955, ma non è sempre stato tutto rose e fiori, soprattutto il giorno dell’apertura, un vero disastro...

Disneyland is known as the happiest place on earth. But it’s had a lot of problems over the years, including disasters and even deaths.

Walt Disney had the idea for Disneyland from going to small theme parks with his children. He wanted to build a place where parents and children could have fun together because this was difficult in Los Angeles at that time. He bought a site in Anaheim and lived in an apartment over the fire station while people built the theme park around him. After Disneyland opened, Walt continued to live there sometimes and you can still visit his apartment today.

About 28,000 people went to Disneyland’s opening day, on July 17th, 1955. It was a total disaster! About half of the people used fake tickets to get in, so the park was overcrowded. It was also very hot, at 38ºC. The street surface wasn’t dry, and stuck to people’s shoes. The drinking fountains weren’t working and there wasn’t enough food for everyone. Three areas of the park – Fantasyland, Adventureland and Frontierland – had to close because of a gas leak. And, by the end of the day, about half of the rides were broken.

After opening day, many people thought that Disneyland would be a failure: they were very wrong. More than 650 million people have visited the park since then, making it the most visited theme park in the world. Disneyland is now called Disneyland Park, and is part of the Disneyland Resort. The resort also has a second theme park, called Disney California Adventure, three hotels and an area known as Downtown Disney, which has shops, restaurants and a cinema.

Disneyland is a place you go to to feel like a child again. It has lots of places to eat but only one place where you can drink alcohol, and that’s a restaurant called Club 33. If you want to visit Club 33, you have to book 10 years in advance and pay at least $1,000.
The park has had some accidents over the years, and a few people have even died there. One of the last big accidents was in 2003, when the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster derailed, killing one young man and injuring 10 other visitors. In spite of its problems, Disneyland continues to have about 15 million visitors a year. It also continues to make the dreams of children, young and old, come true.

The more time you spend at Disenyland, the more it will cost you. There are various types of tickets available, but the entrance fee is not cheap!

1-Day 1 - Park Ticket:
Ages 3 to 9: $86.00 (€62, roughly)
Ages 10 & up: $92.00 (€66, roughly)

Gas leak.
